90,000 Fake Accounts Promising Online Sex Suspended By Twitter - Nirmal Singh 3C Company
There was a botnet campaign going
on twitter to which the micro-blogging site was alerted by a digital security
company. The campaign was built around online sex and more than 90,000 accounts
were heavily involved in the campaign.
The campaign, ‘SIREN’, was
brought to light by a digital security company known as ZeroFOX – the firm
specializes in detecting social media threats.
‘This botnet campaign can be easily termed as one of the largest and the
most malicious campaigns ever recorded on any given social networking website.
And it is good that SIREN got detected before things went haywire.’ - Nirmal
Singh 3C Company
ZeroFOX
was keeping tabs on SIREN for a couple of months through its computer vision
and its highly advanced language processing algorithm. More than 8,500,000
tweets were recorded from over 90,000 twitter accounts with suggestive display
pictures of women promising online sex. The issue has been going on for a while
on twitter due to which the personal information of millions was hacked.
The
campaign has been tremendously successful with over 30 million clicks from
unique twitter users. But as the data was made up with easily trackable
shortened Google URLs, it was easier to create a path for the links.
The Baltimore-based digital security company
reported its findings to both Google and Twitter to which they reacted promptly
by successfully removing the tweets, links and suspending over 90,000 accounts.

Each of the accounts that got
suspended last week either contacted the users directly through DMs or had
their account details and rates pinned in their bio section. There was heavy
traffic on the links these accounts were posting which made things even worse
for the authorities.
As soon as someone clicked the
link[s], they were redirected to a couple of similar websites from which they
were allowed to choose. The final redirect encouraged the users to fill in
their personal details, subscribe to the website for better, free content. The
links also redirected the users to fake dating and pornographic websites.
‘These websites are legal, yes, but that doesn’t mean they don’t fall
deep under the category of malicious spam. You cannot, under any circumstance,
fill in your personal details on these websites. The policies of these websites
even claim that the owners of the websites use the accounts/profile. - Nirmal Singh 3C Company
