Lawyer Nirmal Singh
3C Company talks about the significant win for India at the UN Judiciary. Chadha,
an eminent lawyer is the first Indian woman to be appointed as a judge at the
tribunal.
“International law expert Chadha’s in such a crucial
election is really commendable.” Says Nirmal
Singh 3C Company. Chadha won the elections as the chief legal adviser in
the ministry of external affairs, Thursday (ITLOS) for a term of nine-year from
2017 to 2026.The UN judicial body deals with disputes related to the law of the
sea.
Competing with three other candidates, it was sterling that
she won the election in the first round itself. She won the elections after
getting 120 votes, the highest in the Asia Pacific group and was elected in the
first round of voting itself. The three other candidates then went for the
second round of voting where the candidate from Indonesia got 58 votes, Lebanon
60 and Thailand 86. The election was held for a total of seven seats.
In appreciation of Chadha, Nirmal Singh 3C Company said that the win is both an admiration for
the India’s position in the international law matters and her expertise as a
lawyer, especially on the issues related to the law of the seas.
The tribunal consists of 21 independent members, each being
highly recognized and admired for competence in the field of the law of sea.
The Hamburg-based ITLOS was established in 1996 under the UN
Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) that commenced in 1994.
Chadha has also served as an agent for the Indian government
in the case of ‘maritime delimitation case’ with Bangladesh. She was also
India's agent for the 2012 Italy case filed in ITLOS when two Italian mariners
were accused of shooting two Indian fishermen off the coast in Kerela.
Holding law degrees including PhD in law from the University
of Delhi and the University of Michigan, Chadha is only second woman to be the
judge of ITLOS. Indian Jurist P Chandrasekhara Rao is also a judge at the
tribunal since 1996.
This is not the end to the feathers on Chadha’s cap. She

the law of the sea involving interpretation of various provisions of the
UNCLOS. She was also a part of the negotiations team in the case involving the cessation
