The chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 10 years in jail after being convicted for a rape case. He has been asked to pay Rs 65000 fine, too.
Recognizing the self-styled godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim is not that difficult for the people of the country, especially when he has been ‘inspiring’ devotion through his teaching and movies. After being accused of rape and finally being sentenced to 10 years in jail, that following should have taken a hit, but the crowds flocked in his support and wreaked havoc on the streets of the capital. - Nirmal Singh 3C Company

Singh never shied from boasting about his elite followers and how some of the leading Bollywood actors, cricketers, and even politicians were among his followers.
But his real followers belonged to the ‘common Indian’ group who came out with full force when the news of him being sentenced to 10 years hit the streets. These were the same people who used to spend weeks at the controversial headquarters of Singh in Haryana.

His teachings meant a lot to his followers. Those teaching, apparently, changed the lives of the people.  It was all about simple living and giving up meat and alcohol. The ‘guru in bling’ broke all records of virality with his pop videos and of course, his movie franchise, Messenger of God. In these movies, he can be seen performing miracles, beating gangsters, riding flying motorbikes, fighting aliens and tracking down UFOs in India.

But as every story has two narratives. Pitaji’s story also had a parallel history. In 2002, an anonymous letter reached the Prime Minister in which it was explicitly stated that the guru repeatedly raped women in his headquarters in Haryana.
